Wrestlers Series

My recent paintings use WWE wrestlers as their subject, focusing on abstract compositions of entangled bodies that magnify the tension between masculinity, sexuality, intimacy, aggression and vulnerability. I am drawn to the physical closeness of the wrestlers and the ambiguity between intimacy and aggression. The work shows intimate bodily interdependence which contradicts ideas of ‘masculine’ independence. I am interested in masculinity not as something inherent to male bodies or confined to a gender binary, but as a set of behaviours and performances that can be adopted by anyone. Blurred brush strokes highlight bodies and identities as fluid rather than fixed. 
Alongside the wrestlers, text-based works explore the spider as a female archetype and the act of web-making as a metaphor for interconnectedness and entanglement. The web suggests that individuals, social structures and ecosystems do not exist independently, but are held within complex networks of interdependence.
